System Assessment & Scheduling
We book your blowout appointment for mid-September through early October—before the first hard freeze but after you're done watering for the season. We don't run blowouts into November, so booking in this window is important. When we arrive, we assess your system size, number of zones, and any existing issues that need attention. We confirm compressor access points and walk through what to expect.
Zone-by-Zone Compressed Air Blowout
Starting with the zone farthest from the compressor, we connect our commercial air compressor to your system and activate one zone at a time. Compressed air forces water out through sprinkler heads until only air comes out—usually 2-3 minutes per zone. We repeat this process for every zone in your system, ensuring complete water removal.
Controller Shutdown & Protection
We set your controller to 'rain' or 'off' mode so it doesn't try to run the system during winter. For outdoor controllers, we note any weatherproofing issues. We don't disconnect power completely—the controller's internal clock needs to stay running so your programs are ready for spring startup.
Backflow Preventer & Valve Winterization
Your backflow preventer is the most freeze-vulnerable component. We open the test cocks and drain valves to release trapped water. For ball valves and gate valves, we leave them slightly open so any residual water has room to expand without cracking the valve body. We inspect valve boxes for standing water and drainage issues.
Final System Inspection & Documentation
Before leaving, we complete a final winterization check and may note any obvious issues we notice. Detailed sprinkler head, emitter, coverage, and system adjustments are handled during spring startup. We document the number of zones serviced, and if we find anything urgent, we discuss it with you on the spot.
Spring Reactivation Reminder
In early spring (typically late March), we'll reach out to schedule your spring start-up. This service includes turning the water back on gradually, testing for freeze damage, adjusting heads, and reprogramming your controller for the growing season. Your irrigation system sits dormant for 5-6 months from late October through late March. That's 150+ days where any water left in the system can freeze, thaw, refreeze, and cause cumulative damage.
